while I live, I’ll fear no other thing So sore, as keeping safe Nerissa’s ring.

I am Gratiano, Bassanio’s friend. Bassanio is a gentleman of Venice, and I went with him to Belmont because he wanted to marry a woman called Portia. I met and fell in love with Portia’s maid, Nerissa, and married her. But I had to leave her right after the wedding to go with Bassanio to help his friend Antonio. He was taken to court by the horrible Jewish moneylender, Shylock. When Antonio won the case, Bassanio and I thanked his lawyer and clerk by giving them the rings our wives had given to us. When we returned home, Portia and Nerissa were very upset with us for giving away the rings.

Bassanio, Nerissa

  1. I must be one of these same dumb wise men, For Gratiano never lets me speak.
  2. Gratiano speaks an infinite deal of nothing, more than any man in all Venice
  3. Thou art too wild, too rude, and bold of voice, Parts that become thee happily enough And in such eyes as ours appear not faults – But where thou art not known; why there they show Something too liberal.

Dear Agony Aunt

After the lawyer and his clerk rescued Antonio from his forfeit in court, Bassanio and I wanted to thank them by giving them a gift. The only things they would take are the rings our wives had given and made us promise to keep forever. Should we give the lawyer and his clerk the rings?

  • No, you fools! Look closely at them and you may find they look much like someone you know!
