Shylock

The villany you teach me I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.

Profile

I’m Shylock, a Jewish moneylender. My daughter Jessica ran away and married a Christian boy, Lorenzo. I lent a Venetian merchant, Antonio, three thousand ducats. He had to pay me back in three months, or else I would demand a pound of flesh from him. I didn’t like Antonio because of the things he has said about me. When he didn’t pay me back I took him to court to get my payment - which was a pound of flesh - but a clever lawyer got him off. I was forced to give up half of my wealth as a punishment. I also had to become a Christian, and when I die give the rest of my money to Lorenzo and Jessica.

Dear Agony Aunt

I loaned a merchant some money, and he didn’t pay me back when the money was due. Our contract says he must pay me a penalty, but everyone is trying to talk me out of it. I think it’s only fair that I get what’s coming to me, do you agree?

Responses

  • Yes, I think you are right and deserve your reward.

  • I agree with Shylock because a deal is a deal and Antonio has agreed to this deal. So if Antonio has agreed to this deal it means that he gets what's coming to him and just accepts that he's made the deal and there is nothing he can do to stop it.

  • I know a deal is a deal but you should be proud of being who you are. You could just lend him the money and be happy with what you have already.
